With the release of the Songs For Someone album, Bryan J. Nelson brings a new feel to a classic genre. Lush with addicting progressions, a classic folk style, and a straight forward lyrical scheme, the record boasts the aesthetic of indie folk anthems. Though the songs are diverse from one another, there is a glue that holds them all together much like a concept album would. Most importantly, the EP never loses sight of the emotional platform great songs are built from.
The first single, “Up For the Fight” is an instant folk pop classic. Complete with smooth vocal harmonies, and up lifting chorus, the song seems to breathe and build as it plays on.
“Up for the fight is about picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and fighting for what it is that you want when life gets you down. It’s about not listening to other peoples’ judgment and criticism and making your own path. It is the main line in the chorus of the song ‘Up for the Fight’ and is the main theme/idea of the album.” explains the songwriter of his single.
Although the single does speak volumes for the album, to get a real understanding of where Nelson is coming from, it should be heard in its entirety.
“My songs are a reflection of things/struggle/personal things and people that have affected me in some way. It’s all a very honest, lyrical and melodic music. My sound over the years has evolved from basic folk songs to some edgier electric stuff to the more polished singer/songwriter sound that is currently on the album. Consequently, this perhaps happened by circumstance as my original acoustic guitar, a Washburn D-21 that my parents got me for high school graduation, is the only guitar that did not succumb to the depths of the pawn shops. ” says Nelson of his songwriting approach.
Based out of Walla Walla Washington, songwriter / performer Bryan J. Nelson studied music at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. While becoming a percussion performance major, he focused also on writing original material. Gigging on stages and coffee shops around the local WA area, he finds strength in live performance although writing and recording is where his heart is at. The Songs for Someone album was performed by Nelson himself and is a perfect example of where he is at with his music today. It was recorded and mixed at the famous London Bridge Studio (Peral Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden) in Seattle Washington.
The ‘Up For the Fight” single was already picked up by a design company called Free Warrior Designs and the songwriter is always working on new material for upcoming releases.
Songs for Someone is now available for streaming and downloads on most major digital outlets and Nelson has performances lined up in support of his releases including a CD release show on the 26th.
