After working as a music teacher in Canada for many years, Lisa moved to Taiwan in 2004 to teach English as a second language. She lived and worked in Asia for a few years before deciding that a career change was in order. It was in there, in Taiwan, that her self-titled debut album was written and recorded. Produced by Russell Rodgers of Aquamarine Studios in Taichung, the album features some of the best session musicians that Taiwan has to offer.

Lisa returns to Canada in August and will soon call Fredericton, New Brunswick home. Her debut album will be released on Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Lisa Gillam Releases Debut Album

After entertaining audiences in Taiwan for two years, the talented musician from Newfoundland has brought her captivating solo act back home to Canada.

Lisa Gillam released her debut album at a free show in St. John’s, Newfoundland on August 18th, 2009. The event drew a full house at The Republic in downtown St. John’s. Lisa was joined by Scott Mansfield on drums, Glen Collins on lead guitar and Mark Peddle on bass guitar for an intimate evening of songs and stories.

This marks a huge step in the career of the multi-talented acoustic singer-songwriter. Lisa, originally from Stephenville, taught music in St. John’s for ten years. As a result of cutbacks in education, the public school teacher moved overseas in 2004 to teach English as a second language. She lived and worked in Asia for four years, and it was there that her self-titled debut album was written and recorded.

Shortly after arriving in Taiwan for the second time in 2007, Lisa decided that a career change was in order. She began writing and performing her own music shortly after her arrival, and celebrated the release of her debut album in Taichung, Taiwan in June of 2009.

Influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Sarah McLachlan and Jann Arden, Lisa’s gorgeous melodies, soothing voice and captivating lyrics have helped her develop a broad fan base from all age groups. While she is mainly a folk artist, you can hear elements of other genres such as blues and country in her music. This brilliant but subtle blend of styles provides a little something to satisfy any musical taste.

The album was recorded at Aquamarine Studios in Taichung Taiwan. It was produced by Russell Rodgers, originally of Nelson, BC, and features some of the best session musicians that Taiwan has to offer.

Lisa is currently planning a fall tour of Atlantic Canada.
