First, use the music search function to do a search for local artists. Listen to the bands - when you find one you like, place the artist in your top friends list. Then shoot that band an email telling them you would love it if they would listen to your music and consider adding your music profile to their top friends list as well.

If you are what you eat, you're also what you recommend.  Don't just try to trade with the artists whose profiles get the most traffic - make sure you really like the music. Remember, your fans will be checking out your top friends – so you want your recommendations to be good.  If you chince out when making personal recommendations to your fans, you'll squander the favorable rep you've worked so hard to gain with them.
