Bundled Downloads
Offer a zip file of free mp3's with other local musicians.
If you're willing to give away a free song, here is an excellent approach for promoting your music.
Create a collection of free songs from local artists (about 10 to 20 songs with permission), zip them together and put them on your site for downloading. The trick is that each artist in the collection will host and put a link to the free songs on their websites as well. Now all of you are promoting each others' music simultaneously while offering your fans something of value.
Make the link something catchy and interesting like "15 mp3s for your Ipod.. FREE! Click here to download now." Then put a little blurb describing what you are doing and what they will get in the download.
This idea is excellent for the listener because they are getting lots of free music with just one file to download. This saves them time, hassle and makes getting free music easier for them to do. After downloading, the listener simply transfers the songs to their mp3 player and voila- you're in their personal play list. And this is exactly where you want to be because it is here that repetition of your music will occur and this is how you will become a part of this person's musical vocabulary.
To get started, draft an email explaining to other musicians what you are going to do, and if they would like to participate, outline what they would have to do. After all your songs, zip files and links are in place, now is a great time for each band to market the new download bundle to their mailing lists to further the effectiveness of the promotion.
Variation: Require the visitor to register or send you an email in order to get to the link for the free downloads. Now your download bundle can grow your mailing list for you as well.
