Franco Esteve was born in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, and had a multicultural upbringing throughout the United States and Europe. This multicultural upbringing led to his adoption of the concept of everywhere and nowhere for his views of life, origin, and culture. The same has applied to his professional life as well, covering a multitude of disciplines, feeding his thirst for knowledge and expression.

As a child he developed in music and piano, and also as an actor, acting in local commercials and theater, later developing in other areas of production, photography, design, and film. He’s fully bilingual in English and Spanish, and has a working knowledge of Catalan, as well as a degree in psychology. His professional life reflects a multitude of disciplines, mostly focusing on design, writing, photography, advertising, music, web development, and film.

He’s produced and directed commercials and music videos, but is best known for his work with The Doll Chronicles series of short films, particularly Consequence, The Doll Chronicles, which he produced and directed. He also composed the music for the series, for which he’s received accolades.

Though his work is more focused on scoring for films, and he has a special love for the genre, he’s never thought of himself as tied down to it. He finds all genres have great music, and loves to explore them all. On a single playlist, he might jump from Nine Inch Nails to Beethoven to Snoop Dogg to Led Zeppelin to The Ink Spots to John Barry to She Wants Revenge. Mostly he expresses himself as seeking beauty and expressing it, no matter the art form.

His latest work, Contagion, was created as an expression of feelings and music that the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and quarantine brought to light. It’s a contemporary classical life soundtrack, serving as a soundtrack to the contagion, to its spread, to its mystery, its attack on the body, to our losses during the Covid-19 pandemic and to our future beyond them.

SCORING THE PANDEMIC, CONTAGION, TELLS THE COVID-19 STORY IN MUSIC

Franco Esteve’s New, Contemporary Classical Concept EP, “Contagion,” attempts to give an orchestral soundtrack to the Covid-19 Pandemic

Cala Ratjada, Baleares, Spain: Puerto Rican artist and composer, Franco Esteve, has released a new, modern, classical crossover music album called “Contagion”. The concept album, highly anticipated due to its popular, previously released and well-reviewed album, “The Hunt,” is meant as a “life soundtrack,” giving a score to Franco Esteve’s experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic and quarantine . 

While the multi-disciplinary artist and composer is known to create music with a film focused, story-driven approach created to elicit images and feelings in listeners, this latest work, “Contagion,” draws directly from the Covid-19 pandemic experience, expressing it in music. 

Esteve is an award-winning filmmaker and composer, and soundtrack lovers in particular will be keen to appreciate the story and personal “movie” that the album is meant to evoke. “Contagion was really an interruption, similar to what’s happened to all of us with the quarantine. As the pandemic overtook all media, it was this music that needed to be expressed, seeing the virus spread, the people spreading it, friends and family infected, and the loss of loved ones. The contagion overtook me, and wouldn’t let go until I’d expressed its story in music.”

Esteve sees “Contagion” as the soundtrack to the pandemic, to many people’s own experiences throughout the quarantine or through the illness itself, taking elements of the Covid-19 story and giving life to them. “Everyone’s relationship to the virus and the quarantine is different. I’ve been spared illness, but have experienced the loss of loved ones and some close calls with the virus. Contagion became more than just the expression that I couldn’t shake, but also a way to honor the people and experiences of a worldwide trauma we’re all going through.”
